Vulnerability is the gatekeeper that leads you towards opportunity. I wrote my last post on the power of owning your story. And the more I walk with God, the more I discover not only the power to own your story, but the power in owning your disappointments. 

Three days after my 23rd birthday, I got into a major car accident. My car was totaled. I was taken by surprise. My life was at the best place it had ever been, and honestly, I didn’t understand why this had happened. The only thing I was certain of was that this experience had purpose attached to it. I needed to own this moment and allow God to attach his glory to my story. 

And isn’t your walk with God sometimes filled with unexpected disappointments? Everything is going great and something unexpected causes a detour in your journey. I’ve learned, that reroutes are exciting because it means God is up to something. He’s in the business of making something new in your life every single day. Discovering God’s “new” in the midst of the disappointment is an opportunity for you to own that moment. And Isaiah 42:16-20 serves as a reminder to recognize the grandness of God through your current cloudy circumstance when it states: ““This is what GOD says, the God who builds a road right through the ocean, who carves a path through pounding waves, The God who summons horses and chariots and armies— they lie down and then can’t get up; they’re snuffed out like so many candles: “Forget about what’s happened; don’t keep going over old history. Be alert, be present. I’m about to do something brand-new. It’s bursting out! Don’t you see it? There it is! I’m making a road through the desert, rivers in the badlands.” 

It’s in owning the moment where God begins pruning the pride and the self sufficiency you never knew you held onto so tightly. It’s in owning the moment where you begin to sow joy instead mourning, resilience instead of idleness, trust instead doubt, and confidence instead of fear. 

Owning this moment starts by:

• Surrendering 
  • What is something that you need to surrender?
    • If you are in this season wishing you knew what is next, you will miss out on what God wants to show you right now.
      • For God is not looking to use someone who has it all together; He is looking for an open vessel that is ready to let go. 

• Obeying
  • Who are you obeying?
  • The decisions you make today will create your tomorrow. 
    In Hebrew, Obedience is the word “Shama” which means “to hear” or “to listen.” You already know how to recognize and respond to the voice of God. So, what is your life is causing you to question what God is saying?
  • Your journey with God is filled with multiple stops that build in you the vision and the character to not only see what God can do through you, but to see what God can do in you.

• Walking 
  • Walking is a daily action made of of steps. Throughout this process, I’ve learned is not about taking the biggest steps, but about taking some steps. 
  • Your faith is what holds your spirit together.
    It is not about perfection, it is about progress.
    And this prompts me to confidently tell God “Hey! I’ll own this moment even when what I am going through doesn’t look like what you’ve promised. I trust you, and I know that as I take steps of faith into the unknown, you’ll be with me.” 
  • I’m taking action. This process has allowed me to choose to push through the discomfort as I get rid of the pride & self sufficiency, because on the other side of that disappointment is the person that God created me to be.
